Winter Onboard in Annapolis

—Blogpost written by Bob

Friday, November  13

The rain finally stopped!  The sky was still mostly overcast in the morning but the sun is expected to make a full appearance this afternoon.  I took my camera for a walk in the morning.

This is one of my favorite images of Annapolis,
looking from Main Street through Hyde
Alley to homes on Cornhill Street.

All around Annapolis during the pandemic there were portable electronic bill boards that flash the message “BE KIND—MASK REQUIRED.”  When I watch the evening news on TV I am reminded of how different this message is from most other areas of this country where “kindness” seemed like a value from the very distant past and masks somehow became political statements.

Along Main Street in Annapolis. areas of
the street were cordoned off for
use as outdoor dining.

Behind the Market House, nearby
restaurants had tents setup
in the street for outdoor
dining.

We had my "Chicken Sauvignon" (remember, my crockpot dish) for lunch but it was terrible.  I don't know what went wrong but it was no where near as good as my Beef Burgundy.  Maybe chicken and white wine shouldn't be cooked together--for sure, I shouldn't cook them together.

I spent most of the afternoon repairing my new camera--the rubber grip came loose on the right side.  First, I tried the garden-variety contact cement which was not at all effective, probably because of the type of plastic used for the camera base.  Then, I went back to the nearby hardware store to get a better adhesive and was pointed to a 3M product.  Even though I bought the 3M adhesive, I first tried 3M's VHB tape (which I keep on the boat) and it worked great!  (I think that the adhesive I picked up at the hardware store, 3M Black Weather Strip Adhesive, would have worked well too.)

The sun was out in full force as we woke up.  It was cool outside (in the 40's).  I turned on the oil-filled radiator in the enclosed cockpit.  Lola jumped out into the cockpit and started her duck watching--she loves being outside in the cockpit!

Our plan for the day revolved around Penn State's football schedule--the game starts at noon.  My plan for the morning was to clean up my navigation station area--it really gets sloppy in a short amount of time, except for the small footprint that my laptop assumes.

This has been a bad season for Penn State after losing their best running back to a heart problem and the second best running back to injury.  Penn State has been playing from behind in every game so far.  They lost to Nebraska 27-20, failing in their two comeback attempts late in the game.

Clouds gathered overhead as the morning developed and the outside temperature increased from the mid-50's into the mid-60's.  Rain was expected very late in the day.  The wind was 15-18 knots out of the southeast but we were well sheltered from the bulk of it here in the harbor.  (I'm thankful for the fact that the weather is still relatively warm this late in the year.)

My goal for the day was to make some adjustments to our temporary TV antenna and then practice on my my ukulele--a simple plan for the day.

We had to adjust our fenders when the
wind picked up in the early afternoon.
(The tide was also higher
than normal.)

We listened to the Philadelphia Eagles - New Giants football game in the afternoon--lots of very good ex-Penn State players on both teams.  My team, the Eagles, lost.

Practicing my chords on my Enya
(carbon fiber) ukulele. (It's
not going very well.)

That's about all for this blogpost...stay tuned for more activities of an old liveaboard sailor.
