Winter Onboard in Annapolis

—Blogpost written by Bob

Friday, February 26

Wow!  Yet Another warm sunny day!  The weather forecast predicts rain starting tonight and going into tomorrow BUT it should remain relatively warm!  (The rain clouds gathered in the late afternoon.)

We had sandwiches for lunch today but they

don't compare to the sandwiches I ate
as a kid outside Philadelphia.

I grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania, 40 miles outside of Philadelphia.  I really miss the cheese steaks and hoagies we had back in the Philadelphia area.  I had a cheese steak for lunch today, made here in Annapolis.  They got the steak and the cheese parts right but the roll was all wrong.  The same thing is true to what we used to call "hoagies," here they are referred to as Italian subs or just "subs" or Italian sandwiches.  The rolls are just not right.

Subway doesn't come close either.  The only franchise that gets it right (in my opinion) is Jersey Mikes and they are difficult to find in this area.

Our new 3-liter teakettle
was made in China.

This past week we purchased a new tea kettle on Amazon--it turned out to be one of our more treasured finds.  Our old teakettle was rusting around the top edge where the lid was fastened--apparently it was only coated to look like stainless steel.  Our new teakettle is 100% stainless steel!  We had three choices in sizes: 2.5-liter, 3-liter, and 6-liter.  We chose the 3-liter but the 2.5-liter would have been fine.

We completed our day without any drama or catastrophes and I guess that it was a good day because of that, if nothing else.  I was getting tired of waiting for my radiation treatments and I guess I was a little "cranky" as a result.  (My first radiation treatment for my prostate cancer is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2, five days before my 74th birthday.)

Saturday, February 27

It had rained during the night and it was raining in the morning when we awoke.  (I love the sound of the rain on the cabintop!)  The outside temperature was 39 degrees F and expected to reach a high of 54 degrees in the afternoon.  (The inside of the boat remained nice and toasty all night long with the two oil-filled radiators on their medium setting.  The balsa-cored hulls and decks of the Landfall 38 help keep the boat warm too!)

Heart-shaped Cheerios
and fresh blueberries
for breakfast!

We usually don't plan things for Saturday and Sunday because we won't be able to get a parking space for our car if we leave our current parking space.  With the rain today and fewer tourists,  that may be different (but we still don't have a plan).

I continued reading my latest book about San Miguel de Allende, this one by an expat who currently gives tours of San Miguel de Allende.  One of the things I learned from this book is that the Spaniards would build churches on top of indigenous holy sites which made it easier to convert the indigenous people to Catholicism.  (There are more churches and chapels in SMA than any other city or town in Mexico.)  In addition to converting indigenous people to Catholicism, the Spaniards were very interested in the productive silver mines in the area.

Feeding seagulls in the
waterfront park.

We fed the seagulls in the afternoon after the rain cleared--they are always hungry and they always come for bread.  There was not one in sight when we threw the first piece of bread.  Within minutes, there was a dozen or more.

Sunday, February 28 (Last Day of February!)

Rain, rain, and more rain--over an inch of it was expected today.  The precipitation was expected to continue through tomorrow afternoon.  Oh well, at least it is relatively warm (mid-40's).  To me, the rain makes a very comforting sound and it gives life to the plant world.

After breakfast onboard (leftover baked French toast), we lounged about and worked on some odds and ends (the filter in our dehumidifier failed--we tried just cleaning it but we couldn't get ti to work again--I ordered a new one), nothing too strenuous.  On my agenda for today, was cleaning up the navigation station desk--it's getting kind of messy again.  We gathered up some of our heavy winter clothes to take to our storage unit--we are counting on very few very cold days ahead.

Discouraged by the rain, Lola sits on the
cabintop by the companionway.

We ordered take out (Chinese) from Jack's Fortune for lunch--it was a nice change of pace.  The rain kept us in the boat all day.  Time for more reading...

Stay tuned for more onboard life in Annapolis during the winter.  Thanks for following our blog!
