Summer in Baltimore

—Blogpost written by Bob

Monday, August 3

We drove to Annapolis today primarily because I had a doctor's appointment (my urologist!) and while there we had a nice lunch at Italian Market before proceeding with some chores we had on our "to do" list.

We had a delicious pizza from
Italian Market for lunch.

We had pizza with green peppers and pepperoni at Italian Market for lunch.  While we always say the pizza we ate that day was the best we've ever had, today's was even better.

We got some of our groceries from Deihls roadside stand in Eastport and the remainder of our groceries from the (Gucci) Giant just off Riva Road.  As were were leaving Giant, the long awaited rain started.  When we got to our marina it was raining very hard.  We managed to get our groceries into the boat without too much rain exposure.

We immediately adjusted some of our dock lines and put a couple more rolls of the jib sheets around our furled jib in preparation for the expected high wind.

I cancelled our GIG-stream appointment for tomorrow (by email) due to the storm's presence.

Tuesday, August 4

The high wind started in the morning--the wind gusts made our mast "pump" as it sometimes does.

Thinking that we would be inside the boat for most of the day, I began assembling lunch (lasagna) in the crockpot using a new recipe with "no boil" lasagna noodles.  (We were originally going to have short ribs but it would have taken 8 hours and we've now been accustomed to eating one large meal a day, usually lunch.  The lasagna turned out to delicious!

After our late lunch the clouds cleared up and sun appeared and we installed the new stanchion base and the new stanchion, with Maggie working inside the starboard cockpit locker and me working on the side deck.

The new stanchion base looks so much better than all the others that are 34 years old!  The new one was powder coated in black.  The brown coating on all the old stanchion bases is mostly worn off.  We reinstalled the lifelines and the boat is somewhat back to normal again.

This morning I applied the fourth coat of Cetol to the toe rail aft of the stanchion we recently replaced--one more coat to go!

We got our GIGstreem WIFI system installed this morning!  The installation is temporary because I have to run the ethernet cable through the boat from the antenna to the router--right now, the cable is just lying in the cockpit but still connecting the two devices.  I need a ScanStrut cable penetration seal to make the installation permanent (which I can do myself, maybe tomorrow or the next day).

new GIGstreem WIFI
system.

The GIGstreem system was a huge improvement over using the hot spot on our iPhones (which sometimes doesn't work here in Baltimore Harbor).

The rain was heavy at times during the night and it continued into the morning.  We drove to Annapolis shortly after 9 AM to run some errands before Maggie's 2 PM appointment with the oral surgeon to extract one of her wisdom teeth.  The highlight of our day was having lunch at Lemongrass Too.

Ka Pow for lunch at Lemongrass Too.

We stopped at Fawcetts to buy a ScanStrut deck penetration seal so that I could finish the routing of the antenna-to-router cable through the boat.  (I hope to do this tomorrow.)

By the afternoon, the clouds moved on and the sun appeared.

Stay tuned for the permanent installation of the antenna-to-router cable and more...
